Grenada Billfish Tournament starts today! |
Yacht Club Jetty - before the start Was just looking at the lagoon from our balcony and admiring the fishing boats taking part in the Grenada Billfish Tournament.
This is held every year around this time and we get boats from several of the other islands, with the largest contingent coming from Trinidad.
We did this for a few years as well, with our pirogue 'BlackJack', but not anymore.
With all the large boats taking part now, smaller boats like ours are at a big disadvantage.
It is now a tag and release tournament, which basically means that boats only bring in fish which they think will break a record, or which pass a minimum weight to enter for points.
You should be able to see some of the action from webcam2, as we will have it zoomed into the Yacht Club when they return in the afternoon.
Fishing boats make they move to the start The first day is usually the best, from a spectators point of view, because all the boats are lined up outside the harbor for a bimini start. The only drawback is that it happens at 7am! Boats rush off - click to enlarge We managed to get a few shots of the start.
This year we counted about 38 boats taking part.
Boats return around 5pm, and you can see some of the catch being weighed in at the yacht club jetty.
Boats rush off - click to enlarge The tournament has gotten quite popular over the years and we have visitors who come in and hire boats or join crews, just to take part.
In January, it is this and the sailing festival which are the biggest events happening.
Last year, one of the records at the tournament was broken. I guess we'll have to wait and see if another one falls this year.
