Green flash...excuse me, i mean ..blip!

Green flash - photo from wikipedia
One of the little things which seem to elude lots of people, is the green flash...or, as Moni would put it, the green blip.

Personally, i have seen it a few dozen times....well, its either the green flash or i was seeing green spots after staring at the sunset waiting for the green flash.

Moni had not seen one until about a year ago.

Her first reaction when i told her about it was 'Yeah, right! Pull the other leg! ''Only after a few rum punches!'

She had never seen one. Just so happened that we managed to see one soon after we were talking about it.
You should have seen the look on her face..;-)....after nearly going blind staring at the sunset, we were rewarded by a nice green flash...at least, i thought it was a flash...Moni was left wondering if the green 'blip' she saw was what everyone was making such a big deal about.

Its one of those things you associate with the Caribbean...at least, i've always thought so, although it is possible to see it from just about any latitude.
No need to go over the scientific explanation as that would just kill the mystique of it ..(here is a link to a proper explanation on Wikipedia for anyone who wants to know.

Needless to say, you do not always see one. It is only when conditions are ideal and you least expect it, that one occurs.
Very rarely, you can also see one at sunrise...Anyone enterprising enough to wake up, or stay awake, for that event better make sure that they have lots of patience. You are much more likely to see one at sunset!

I hope you are not expecting anything dramatic, like waves of green across the sky or green strobes...if you blink at the wrong time, you'll miss it..it is that rare!

So, don't forget to keep an eye out for that rare special event...the green 'Blip'!

Yes it's real I remember looking for "the green flash" on saturday evenings with my family from our balcony at our home in Morne Jaloux when I was a little girl.

It leaves a warm feeling inside, after seeing one green flash you would want to see another and another and ........... well you get the picture.

Something seems to be lost in translation. Somehow it just did not sound like "blip" I heard Monja say it.

I saw the flash twice on our last trip to Grenada in October.

The best one I have seen was about 3 years ago while watching from about 400 feet above sea level as the sun set with the clouds leaving a narrow gap over the water. That flash went to blue and then to green.

Whether you see the green bloopsb or not the sunsets in Grenada are always worth watching.

I remember seeing the green flash (blip) 5 days out of 7 once in Carriacou. I never get tired of looking for it if conditions are right. I never get tired of Caribbean sunsets for that matter. It may be a little blip but for me this is one of life's special little things to witness.
