Last weekend we were taking a drive around the island, and stopped off at a couple of beaches on the way. One of those which we visited, and one of our personal favourites, was La Sagesse beach.
You can find it on the southeast coast, in the St.David's area. Some people prefer it to the more popular ones, like Grand Anse beach, mainly because it tends to be almost deserted. Even on sundays and public holidays, when you would expect to meet more people there, it still looks empty.
The beach itself is in a bay, so even though the sea can get quite choppy on the east coast sometimes, it does not get rough because it is sheltered. There tends to be a little bit of wave action sometimes. Just enough to make it fun for body surfing.
One of the things which make it ideal for families is that it is quite long and wide, so there is room to spread out and relax, without feeling crowded by other beach goers. Also, it is a gently sloping beach, which provides a large surf area for kids to play in without getting near any deeper water, and even when it is a little choppy in the bay, kids can still enjoy themselves safely.
For most of us lazy beach goers, this makes the walk to deeper water a bit longer, but it is worth it!
The hillsides overlooking the bay used to be totally deserted, but in the last couple of years a few homes have been built. This, in my opinion, kind of spoils it. Before, you had that sort of Robinson Crusoe feel, with the palm trees and lush hillsides. Now, it looks a little more 'civilized', with the few homes built on the ridge.
This weekend when we passed by the beach, there were a few people there, although you would be a little hard pressed to notice, because it still looked deserted. (Just check out the photos we took.)
If you are thinking the typical Caribbean beach with palm trees and lush vegetation in the background, then this is it!
As a place to get married, it couldn't be more convenient or perfect, as there is easy access and the background of palm trees and lush hillsides make it an outstanding location for that special occasion. In fact, quite a few weddings have taken place there.
An added bonus is that there is a good seafood restaurant just a few steps away at the La Sagesse Nature Resort, which is directly on the beach. Perfect as a place to grab some cool drinks, or a meal. We've eaten there quite a few times - excellent food!
The restaurant itself is very open, with nothing to block the views of the beach and sea, but personally speaking, the thing which sets them apart from other places to eat, is the friendliness of the staff.
The restaurant is part of the resort, which is actually a small boutique hotel. Its nicely hidden away between the palm trees, and does not intrude on the beach or take away from the atmosphere.
Would i recommend it as a place to visit, relax or just laze around on the beach? Absolutely! It is actually in our top five list of beaches on the island.
La Sagesse beach was not the easiest to find but sooooo worth it! We have the most beautiful pictures of the beach and the lovely palm trees. The garden there was beautifully landscaped and a real treat for a plant lover like me.
We had been looking for somewhere to run away to for a few days for a break before Christmas and happened to come across a great special from Air Jamaica. Moni also found a good all-inclusive deal at a small hotel in Negril, so we decided to go. It was a working vacation, but still a chance to see somewhere we had never been before.
The flight was great. Unusual for most airline flights these days, where you get squeezed into a cattle car with barely enough room to sit without having your knees jammed up against the seat in front and so close, it seems that the person in front is actually sitting in your lap!
We even got served food! This was a better than the small bag of stale peanuts they usually throw at you.
Decided to stay in a small cliff resort in Negril, away from the beach, which suited us fine. Something a little different from what we are accustomed to here.
Over the weekend, we decided to take a hike to Concord second falls - Au
Coin Falls.
1st Concord Water fall - the entrance
We had visited the falls twice since hurricane Ivan, more than 4 years ago,
and were curious to see what changes there had been, and whether the trees
and vegetation had regrown.
The difference was astounding! It is a hike that I would recommend in a
heartbeat!
We parked by the main falls, Concord, and started up the trail above, which
will eventually take you to the other two falls - (yes, there are three
falls at Concord.
You don't need a guide for the second falls (Au Coin), but you will
definitely need one for the third falls, as the trail is not well marked.
WOW! Wish you could have seen the rainy weather we have been having recently.
O.k, we didn't take video (forgot), but did manage to take a few photos.
Could have sworn that we had at least 3 waterfalls on our property over the weekend, a smaller version of the Marquis falls and at least 2 that could rival Concord....(o.k, maybe Annandale).
It has been absolutely POURING with rain! The funny thing is that you could wake up the next day and everything is almost back to normal already.....thankfully, the island is a bit hilly, so everything drains off pretty quickly.
Even though we live on a hillside, i can see the benefit of having flood insurance, especially if we get a severe rainstorm.
