Over the last few years we have noticed that people tend to display their national pride, especially around Independence day, more than ever.
In fact, this has been so since hurricane Ivan a couple of years back.
It started out as the usual flag decoration in the same old places, like the government offices, but has grown to the point that, wherever you go on the island, between the middle of January and the middle of February, you will see flags on cars, the national colors painted on the side of the street (usually next to a well decorated rum shop), on t-shirts and homes.
In fact, some of the cars are so decorated with flags that they look like carnival floats.
(Yes, in case you are wondering, we also have one on our car.....)
Of course, the inevitable happens and people complain that they are not respecting the national emblem by draping it across their vehicles, making scarves out of them, blah blah blah.... Personally, i think they are a little too uptight. I don't really care how the flag is displayed. The main point is that people are buying flags and displaying them! I don't think that there has been this much national pride displayed since independence.
Some of the businesses are well decked out in the national colors (green, yellow and red), and even their employees are sporting ribbons or t-shirts in the colors.
Just today, i was by one of the banks in Grand Anse and it was well decorated. Anyone would have thought that it was for a party or something. Even the staff were wearing costumes in the national colors.....If they would only improve their service as well, then maybe i would have appreciated it more.
A little Civic pride goes a long way. In previous years you would be hard pressed to even find a flag to fly, now, if you walk round the block its hard not to find someone trying to sell you one.
We have a lot to be proud of, especially the way Grenadians pulled together to get the place re-built after Ivan.
For now, i'm just happy to wave my little flag and say Happy Independence Day, Grenada!
