The new spice market
We were recently in town on a saturday morning looking for some cucumbers.

Occasionally, there tends to be a shortage of certain fruits and vegetables. The fruits because they are not in season all year round, and the vegetables, because most farmers seem to plant them at the same time, so when the crop is finished, there is a short time when you can't seem to find any.

Just before Christmas, it was tomatoes and cucumbers.

Anyway, we were doing some window shopping in the town and decided to check out the market to see if by chance there were cucumbers available.

If you would like to see a cross section of Grenadian life, then the market on a saturday morning is a good place to be.

It is usually jam packed with with people selling all kinds of produce. Basically, if it grows on the island and is in season, then you should be able to find it in the market.

Individual stalls are full to bursting, laden with whatever that vendor is selling, and all of it under colorful umbrellas and tarps.

Its loud, you can barely make your way between stalls and you only have to pause for a moment before someone is offering you something to buy, but fun.

Needless to say, we managed to find the cucumbers...they were right next to the tomatoes ;-)

There are lots of things you find in the market that you will not find in the supermarket, particularly, local fruits.

If you don't know the lingo, the names for some of the fruits and vegetables may seem like a totally different language and you might find your vocabulary being reduced to ..."What was that?"..."HUH?"..."Eh?"

"Was she speaking to me, or am i going deaf?"
Don't be discouraged, just smile, nod as if you understand and get someone to explain it later.
Part of the market has been re-done. What they have done is totally refurbish the old wrought iron shed which had been there for decades, and add proper stalls inside. The other half is due to be done...sometime soon (working on Grenadian time ;-).

When next we are in town, i'll have to take a few photos.
