Our Grenada Blog

This is a blog of our life in Grenada, our thoughts on life and the way we view things around us, the way we see life through our sometimes rose colored glasses.

Looking for a hash site....

Posted by Neil and Moni in tourhashBelmont Estate

ImageSunday we decided to go searching for a location to set a hash.

For those of you who don't know what a hash is (sorry, has no relation to hashish, but you never know what you might come across while hashing), you can check out the Grenada Hash House Harriers site.

O.K, for the facts...Grenada is supposed to about 133 sq miles in area...However, with all the hills and valleys, it is actually closer to 500. That leaves a lot of real estate in which to knock about in, and all of it covered in fabulous lush greenery and tropical rain forest....that basically mean that there is a lot of bush.

We have been hashing for years and there are still places on the island where we have not set foot....admittedly, some of those places are vertical in nature, so you had better grow wings and feathers pretty darn fast is you intend to set foot on them.

Anyway, we have agreed to set the next hash and if you are going to go through all that trouble, then its best to make it memorable.
Our philosophy is to set one which has all the key ingredients, like water (rivers or streams), mud (a good sticky location which will be hard to remove), bush (no problem), hills and a rum shop.
If you don't come back feeling tired and extremely muddy, then we have not done our job properly.

Anyway, we headed up to the country to one of the sites which we thought might be worth doing, but kept an eye out for possible alternate locations...like these...

Stopped off in Birchgrove along the way, for some bananas, like we normally do.

ImageThere were a few spots where the local wildlife did not want to co-operate, like this roadblock...Anything which is bigger than your car with horns like that can sleep wherever it wants...no argument!

We went through a place called Ford..(didn't know it existed) and through Grand Bras Plantation (got a great shot of this overgrown arch). Thank goodness for 4 wheel drive... Luckily we did not have to use the optional manual boost (get out and push), but it was a close thing..

Made several small stops on our search, like Belmont Estate (they have totally rebuilt that place).

That place has been totally re-done. Unfortunately, the museum was not open, so we don't know what that was like, but the restaurant and grounds are beautifully restored.

They have a few animals, like tortoises, ducks and parrots.

After that, we made our way through Sauteurs and down the west coast, finding several possible sites, another in Waltham and Beausejour ...

Always amazed to find all these cute little rum shops around the island, some of them with very detailed paint jobs. If it is one thing we have noticed in our travels is that Grenadians like to take care of their homes and shops. Regardless of what they have, it is usually well tended and painted. We would never forget what we have seen in Barbados and Trinidad. One of the reasons why we encourage visitors to visit the little shops around the island, to explore our island outside the tourism areas.

Rum shops are a must when setting a hash...like this one. After all, you do need a goal while trekking through all that nature.

Anyway, after all that knocking about we headed home for lunch and a nap...hey, this is Grenada, you don't need to rush!!

Will have to post some updates when we actually get around to setting the hash itself...be warned!..you'll probably see lots of photos of trees...Moni is always complaining that i take too many of these, but they don't move much and ...o.k, i admit it, i'm a bit of a tree hugger...i like trees ;-)
