Little finds....Posted by Neil and Moni in victoria, souvenirs, bakery |
|
Sunday we decided to go looking for a place to set the next hash, again ....
Of course, we were looking for places slightly off the beaten track, which would be challenging and fun.
Along the way we came across a few things which were little finds that most people tend to miss.
For instance, if you ever wondered which came first, the chicken or the egg, we can definitely say it was the eggplant..;-)
All joking aside, just keeping your eyes open for the unusual will get you photos like these.... (banana, flower).
If you stop now and then and have a look round, you will be pleasantly surprised at the things which stand out or which you might have missed.
Here is a little bakery in Victoria....wasn't open when we passed, but you certainly can't miss it if you are in the area.
One of the things I love about the island is that you only have to stop and look around and Grenadians will come and ask if they can help. Just by striking up a conversation, you will be surprised at how warm and friendly everyone is (you also get the latest gossip in no time flat ;-).
That's one of the resaon why I decided to stay & live in Grenada..... because of the people!! The owner told us he was getting ready to have the place blessed before the official opening. He even let us have a look round the inside. Must say, it is nicely done.
Says he will be serving local herbal teas, as well as freshly baked bread.....i think that it would be worth checking out again.
On our way out of Victoria, we saw this little shop.
Wasn't much to look at, but we did notice some souvenirs in the window and decided to stop and check it out.
The assortment is varied, to say the least, but surprisingly good quality.
The guy who makes the stuff, Ras John, doesn't limit himself to only one or two things. Apparently, he will try just about anything...from fridge magnets, to walking sticks, wind chimes to earrings, necklaces to ashtrays....just check out a few of the things we noticed....
What was probably the most surprising was the variety. If you have ever taken a close look at the souvenirs in the shops, they are usually not made here on the island..(don't be surprised if you find a 'Made in China' sticker on it). Here are a few which are undeniably 'Made in Grenada'. Its a little sad that local shops don't buy more local arts and crafts. Local industries, arts and crafts should be supported...We should be trying to help each other....
